Xero cycles in support of the CAN4CANCER Tour

Team members from Xero will clip in their cleats to support the CAN4CANCER Tour – a three-day cycling event held by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and cycling foundation Tour de Cure to raise money for cancer research, support and prevention.

Since its inception in 2007, the Tour de Cure foundation has raised more than $25 million – funding over 252 vital cancer research, support and prevention projects. Incredibly, their work has resulted in 18 scientifically recognised cancer breakthroughs.

This year, Xero – a Gold Sponsor of the event – has set itself a fundraising target of $10,000, and will cheer on four athletic staff members who have shown themselves game enough to take on the three-day challenge. The Xero Sydney team will also participate in the inaugural 21km walk from Sydney city to Parramatta to meet the riders at the finish line.

“It’s going to take a united effort, led by passionate people and businesses who share the dream, to one day see a world without cancer,” said Geoff Coombes, Co-Founder of Tour de Cure. “Cancer is the leading cause of death in Australia and, sadly, will touch one in two people at some point in their lifetime. The good news is that one in three cancers can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices, and with the generous support of Xero and their team – riding 330kms over three days – the 2016 CAN4CANCER tour will share this message with over 2,500 kids along the way.”

Meet the team cycling 300kms

Drew Unsworth, Global Head of Digital and Marketing Services; Ben Styles, Head of Financial Services, AU; William Buckley, Business Manager; and Kate Mcilroy, Marketing Operations Coordinator, will join 130 cyclists riding a gruelling 300kms over three days. Together, the group will cycle from country NSW, through the Blue Mountains, into the city of Sydney in an effort to raise funds and awareness to help men, women and children suffering from cancer.

“This gives us a chance to work closely together with CBA in support of a good, important cause that we’re all passionate about,” said Drew.

“It’s extraordinarily tough when people go through cancer. This is the third year I’ve participated in the event, and it’s a memorable opportunity to make an individual contribution that raises awareness. Cycling for three days over 300kms is hard, and there are lot of people who struggle to finish each day. This year I’ve doubled my preparation.”

CBA has proudly supported the Tour de Cure since 2011. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to raise funds and awareness to help men, women and children suffering from cancer,’ said Charlotte Maltby, Acting General Manager at CBA. “We’re delighted that Xero has agreed to partner with us as a Gold sponsor. We hope they enjoy the opportunity to proudly ride alongside us, stopping at schools in local communities to share the message: be fit, be healthy and be happy.”

The Melbourne team takes a spin

Today the Melbourne team supported the fundraising effort in an office-based spin challenge, where participants were invited to donate, form teams and race to victory. The challenge bikes were donated by Urban Pedalerprofessional bicycle outfitters based in Bentleigh, Victoria – and linked up to a virtual reality system.

“We’re not without choice when it comes to supporting a cause, but when one of our local riders is involved, and it involves cycling, then we’re interested in helping out,” said Gabe Sullens, owner of Urban Pedaler.

“The nature of this particular event is also right up our alley as we are premier dealers for two big brands of products very competitive in cycling: Cannondale road bikes and Tacx indoor Smart Trainers. We built our business from day one with the Xero software platform.”
